In Sardinia they are called Domus de Janas, term which has been simplistically translated as “house of fairies or witches”. Popular tradition has it that fairy creatures lived inside these ancient structures, the Jan, capable of influencing men's lives for better or worse. They could multiply the livestock, give directions for finding a treasure, turn your hair gold, but they could also annoy men who didn't deserve their friendship by making their lives impossible.

In reality things are slightly different: the domus de janas are underground burials that can be traced directly back to the Ozieri culture.

There are also suggestive ones in the Villaputzu area. Anyone who is in the surrounding area cannot miss a visit to the one located in the Oru area. It is implanted in a monolithic block of granite rock and its bicellular structure is immediately noticeable. The entrances to the tomb closely resemble two large empty eyes separated by a long, thin nose, all surrounded by dazzling Mediterranean vegetation.

The two cells are connected and on the walls it is possible to observe ancient ribbed rock working. Probably the attempt was to re-propose it in these eternal homes too, the wooden structure that appeared in the huts. In this way a continuity was created between life and death and above all a comfortable environment for the dearly departed, that was certain, sooner or later he would be reborn.

How to get there

Take the SS 125 towards Tertenia and at km 70,700, the first indications will appear for both the Quirra castle, both for the Domus. You must turn right, hope for the crossroads for the castle and turn right. Continue until you reach the sign indicating the Domus de Janas. Now all that remains is to turn right and walk along the dirt road for a hundred meters that leads directly to the site.
