Of some, very little remains, still others are just as beautiful as they were in the past. Villaputzu is an ideal destination for lovers of medieval churches: has at least two to offer, all worth visiting and photographing.
The church of San Nicola
It is certainly one of the best known and admired. It seems that it was built between the first and second decade of the thirteenth century and all the elegant simplicity of this small church we owe it to the Pisans. Not only is the structure elegant, But also the location in which it was chosen to position it many centuries ago contributes to increasing their charm: It is located at the foot of the Monte del Castello di Quirra, In a rich and exquisitely Mediterranean environmental context.
To make it so special that to date the church of San Nicola is the only example on the island of construction Romanesque brick bricks. It is the linearity that makes it the master: Equipped with a single nave its appearance is ordered and regular. The plant is rectangular and the semicircular plan is easily visible.
At the entrance it is possible to admire a round portal and a sailing bell tower whose colors are emphasized by the brilliant sky of Sardinia. Inside the church, the brightness comes from the two single -part windows that are on the sides and in the apse.
Visiting the church of San Nicola is a relaxing experience, Excellent opportunity to admire the mountain and the remains of the Castle of Quirra also.

Church of Santa Brigida
It is located in the inhabited center of Villaputzu and according to historians it was built in the 16th century: The constructive style is an exquisite Aragonese Gothic to be admired. The church plant is rectangular, The single nave with side rooms dedicated to the three chapels.
Note the masonry altar, The only element of furniture that resisted the state of abandonment to which the Church pays.
Church of San Giorgio
Probably built during the same period also the church of San Giorgio is located in the center of Villaputzu. However, it seems that the building that today shows clear signs of the late Gothic style, has been implanted on a previous structure, probably built by the Genoese during the XII century. Unfortunately due to a structural failure, the church has recently collapsed. A real shame since entirely made of terracotta, With three large naves separated by arches that placed on Romanesque capitals, Probably from some older building.
Ancient churches
At one time in the territory of Villaputzu there were many other religious structures. For example, we can remember the country church of San Michele, of Sant’Elena, of St. Mary Sound and St. Pietro. Of these, only the memory and some ruins that has however allowed scholars to trace the original structures remains today. Byzantine architectural details make the cultural liveliness imagined that the area has had since ancient times.
